Bedford Business Zips into Action Again for the Smart Prebend Centre

Posted on: April 20, 2018

For the past three years The ZipYard alterations and repair centre in Bedford has organised a winter warm clothing collection for the homeless in partnership with the Smart Prebend Day Centre in Prebend Street.

Following on from the success of the 2017 campaign, The ZipYard Bedford owner Graeme Mulheron has decided that he would like to extend the support he gives to the day centre.

So during the week beginning 16 April he will be donating £1 to the Smart Prebend Day Centre on behalf of every customer who brings in an item for alteration, repair or dry cleaning to the High Street centre.

Said Graeme: “Each year I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers during our annual help the homeless campaign.  They get fully behind it and have donated mountains of warm clothing some of which is brand-new with price tags still on.  The great team at the Smart Prebend Centre do an amazing job and make a big difference to the lives of the homeless.  It’s important to think of others less fortunate than ourselves and play a part in the community we serve and we want to do as much as we can to support the Smart Prebend Centre.

“For every item brought into the ZipYard during the fundraising week we will be donating £1 on behalf of the customer and we are aiming to raise over £350.

“I am appealing to the people of Bedford to take this opportunity to bring in garments needing repaired, altered or luxury dry cleaned and at the same time help to support this most worthwhile cause.”

Money raised by The ZipYard from 16-21 April will go towards ongoing costs of the Smart Prebend Centre which is open 365 days a year and provides a wide range of support and services for the homeless in Bedford. The charity needs to make repairs and improve its shower facilities. It also wants to be able to stay open for longer and offer additional afternoon activities.

Said Smart business development and communications manager James Whitcomb, “We are delighted that The Zipyard are continuing to support the centre and immensely grateful for the gifts of clothing we receive each year. Donations from the local community and local businesses are vital in keeping the centre going.

“There’s so much we could spend the money on, but it’s likely that we’ll purchase some new equipment for the kitchen with the donation so that we can continue to serve hot meals every day.”

The ZipYard Bedford is located at 76 the High Street and is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.30pm and from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday. All work is carried out in house by the ZipYard’s own professional seamstresses who can pin up alterations in the centre’s private dressing rooms.
