Besse’s Tea Room to get a new Ma and Pa

Posted on: June 10, 2016

We’re delighted to announce we have sold the iconic Besse’s Bar and Tea Rooms in Bristol for near the asking price.

It’s taken three years of hard work and perseverance to find the right buyer at the right price and there’s been plenty of twists and turns along the way but contracts have just been exchanged and the new owners take over officially on June 1.

As with all of our sales we worked on a fixed fee basis. The vendors Lindy and Phil Leahy had seen three national agents before us, but chose J S Reakes Ltd because of our no frills, honest and open approach.
Explained Mrs Leahy:   “It took us a long time to find the right agent, but when we met with Jon Reakes we just knew we would rather go with them than a big national agent. Beese’s was never going to be an easy business to sell and we didn’t want it to go to anyone who wouldn’t take it forward and feel as passionate about it as we do.

“JS Reakes Ltd gave us a personalised service that was very thoughtful and thorough. I really appreciated the fact that they understood the particular quirks of us and the business and didn’t try to shove a round peg into a square hole for the sake of a quick sale.”
Buyers Kate and Deane Standish fell in love with the riverside tea rooms with its own ferry service when they went to view the business for their nephew.

The owners of the tea rooms have always been known locally as Ma and Pa Besse, a tradition dating back to the mid 1800s when the captain of the Conham Ferry was called Besse and his wife ran the tea garden on the opposite side of the Avon River.

Said new ‘Ma’ Kate: “It’s such a stunningly beautiful place, so quiet and tranquil. As soon as I saw it I just knew it was the place for us although we hadn’t gone there with any intention of buying it for ourselves!

“We’d been looking for a new challenge and although I’ve been a piano teacher for 20 years my earlier career was in hospitality. Because the business is seasonal I can still be involved with music during the winter months so I can have the best of both worlds.

“J S Reakes Ltd couldn’t have been more helpful. They were very thorough and professional and nothing has been too much trouble for them.”
